A Classroom Electroscope for Electrostatic Experiments This pointer electroscope is a practical instrument for studying static electricity in school physics lessons. It is designed to measure the potential difference between two charged objects, check whether an object carries a charge, determine whether a charge is negative, test the insulating properties of materials, and support experiments in inductive electrification. The clear pointer readout makes results easy to observe during demonstrations or individual practical work. How to Measure Potential Difference To measure the potential difference between two charged bodies, connect the metal casing of the electroscope to one charged object and the metal rod to the other. In most cases, the casing is earthed; with the earth taken as zero potential, the electroscope can then indicate the electric potential of each charged body. Checking Charge and Insulation To test whether an object is charged, touch the electroscope ball to the object first, then transfer the acquired charge to the metal rod, or simply bring the metal rod into direct contact with the object. For checking insulation, earth the object by touching it with your hand and bring another point of the object into contact with the charged metal rod. Watch the pointer: if it quickly returns to zero, the material is a conductor; if it does not, the material is an insulator.
