Detailed breakdown of the use steps of the gold pan Step 1: Wash out big rocks and moss 1. Your basin is full, but 3/4 of it is actually gravel. Submerge it in the water so that it is under the surface of the water. 2. Shake the gold pan vigorously, shaking it back and forth from side to side. Make sure there is about an inch of water left in the basin. Water is necessary because you will continue to sift the sand out of the golden bell after taking the basin out of the water. 2. Tilt the basin slightly towards you. Hold the basin and swirl it slowly around in a circle. This will allow you to check if there are any large gold nuggets or pieces of gold by hand to pick them out. 3. Submerge the basin into the water again.
