Description

Saflax - Organic - Broccoli - Calabrese - Brassica oleracea - 100 seeds - Vigorously growing classic variety that produces lots of tasty buds. Create the optimal environment for successful cultivation straight away. Garden in the Bag supplies the growing substrate in a practical, self-erecting bag. Simply add water and watch as the dried, lightweight block creates plenty of growing substrate for your seeds in just a few minutes. Worth knowing: Calabrese develops a strong main stem with a mid-sized head. After harvesting the rose head, the plant grows many side shoots that can be harvested continuously until autumn. Broccoli contains many minerals like potassium, calcium, phosphorus, iron, zinc and sodium, and is also rich in vitamins like B1, B2, B6, E and C.. Like with cauliflower the inflorescence, stem base, stalks and leaves of the Broccoli plant are edible. The stalk has an aroma resembling green asparagus. You can harvest Broccoli as soon as the buds are properly developed, but still closed. Cut the inflorescence with the 10 to 15 cm long stalk and the leaves, but let the plant grow further as it will produce additional small flower heads. Broccoli should be kept cool, dark and covered in plastic wrap in the vegetable drawer of the fridge, where it can be stored for not more than three days. It can be eaten raw, steamed or cooked. Cut the head, flower buds and the peeled stalk into similar-sized pieces to ensure that they are soften in the same and timely way while cooking. Ideally, Broccoli is blanched for two minutes in boiling hot saltwater until it is firm to bite, or it served on a raw vegetable platter with a savoury dip. Natural Place: Broccoli has its origin in Asia Minor. Since the 16th century it has been cultivated in Europe as well. Cultivation: You can start cultivation from January until March in a wind-sheltered cold frame with a fleece cover for frosty nights, or in pot on your windowsill. Plant three seeds per planting hole about 1 cm deep into coconut substrate or organic vegetable substrate. After germination, you can prick the seedlings out leaving only the strongest one. It will take about four to six weeks after seeding until the seedlings have properly developed. A temperature between 15° and 20° Celsius would be ideal for germination. Starting from the end of May, when there are no frosty nights ahead anymore, and as soon as the seedlings have developed a proper rooting, they can be planted out in the open. Provide some underlining/padding with compost and place the seedlings deep enough into the soil so that the roots are covered with about 1 cm of earth. Leave about 40 to 50 cm space between the plants. Place: The plant has high nutrient demand and grows best at a sunny place of the vegetable patch and in well-grounded, nutritious soil with a good water storage capacity. Care: The plant requires watering and nutrition regularly. Water generously, especially on hot days, but avoid water-logging. Weeding and loosening the surrounding soil from time to time will be rewarded by the plant producing a better harvest and flavour. After planting out, you may regularly provide your Broccoli with organic vegetable fertilizer until about two to three weeks before harvesting. During Winter: The plant should be re-seeded every year.
